Scripture

For he delivers the needy when he calls, the poor and him who has no helper. He has pity on the weak and the needy, and saves the lives of the needy. (Psalm 72:12-13)

Observation

The psalmist, likely King Solomon, anticipates the coming of a Ruler (the Messiah) whose reign is compassionate and who uses his power on behalf of the poor. He will deliver the needy (“needy” occurs three times in vv. 12-13) who cry to him and he will rescue them.

Application

Am I doing enough to help the poor? The short answer is, no. Although I do extend compassion to the needy, I don’t do nearly enough. My neglect is not due to a lack of resources because I find myself spending money on non-essentials all the time—e.g., movies, eating out, Starbucks. Sometimes I make the excuse that few people are “legitimately” poor (i.e., poor because of circumstances beyond their control) or that the poor will use the money to support their drug or alcohol habit. I confess that they are excuses, not reasons—I don’t remember Jesus demanding that we means-test our help to the destitute.

At the core of my lack of compassionate care is a hardness of heart. I think I have become so consumed with my own life and agenda that I’ve grown calloused to what makes Jesus’ heart beat fast. What moves God’s heart only slightly moves mine.

And, what am I teaching my children when they don’t see Dad actively engaged in delivering the needy (Ps. 72:13)? I want them to be sensitive to the needs of the disadvantaged and to give generously and cheerfully to help rescue them. But, they may not learn that by following my current example.

As I meditate on today’s passage, God is convicting me to confess my sin, repent, and reprioritize my life. And, that is what I will do.

Prayer

Father, forgive me for my uncaring heart. You have blessed me with so much, yet I have made only token gestures to help the poor. May I not make excuses; instead, may I exemplify the Ruler’s compassion as described by the psalmist and use my power and resources on behalf of the poor. Instill in my children a Christ-like sensitivity towards the impoverished, that they may be generous to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and visit the forgotten, just like their Savior. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
