Bible in One Year Passages:
Mark 1:16-20, 1 Corinthians 2, Joshua 5-6
But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped.
For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task,
until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end. Psalm 73:2-3, 16-17
This must be one of the reasons why monasteries were built, to protect oneself from being tempted to lust after status, power, fame and all that corrupts. In a really base and stupid way, my old prius is just fine until I see someone drive around in a ferrari. My house is a castle, until I walk past a real mansion and I imagine myself living in a "real" house. Living my life in the way of devotion and discipleship is great until I see the earthly benefits of living without a tether. As I look outward, and turn my gaze unto the fortunate and famous, I can't help but to wish and want. My steps do slip and I do stumble. David likewise saw the benefits of not walking in the narrow way, but the benefits are earthly and reality is revealed in the sanctuary of God, in His presence.
What I surround myself with will define whether I falter and lust after the things of this world. Living and walking in His presence is right thing, in light of eternity. And to do that, I need to be in His presence. As a deer pants for water, I need to pursue and seek God and His righteousness, His values, His work, His commendation. How will I be different today because of this? In the middle of the day, I will enter into God's sanctuary and seek a better clarity for the rest of the day.
Being led by earthly desires is no match to walking with you and seeking and receiving your commendation. Help me today, Lord, to live more consciously in your presence. In your presence, there is truly a fulness of joy. Without you, nothing will satisfy.
