Bible in One Year Passages:

Journal Entry

Scripture

15And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, "Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?" 17And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners."

Observation

Jesus called a tax collector to follow him (to become an apprentice aka disciple). Jesus reclined at Levi's house with the tax collector. This wasn't a quick "hi" he was spending time with them. The people Jesus spent time with was what caused others to accuse him of wrong doing. His response is clarifying of his vision.

Application

I'm really struck by the truth of who Jesus chooses to spend time with. Do I spend time with people outside of the "center" of who we consider "right"? I feel compelled to ask myself, who in my sphere needs and is aware of their need of a different kind of life? A life with Jesus so that they can be lead to the Father for all of eternity. Do I go outside my comfort zone? What prevents me? Is my vision of life the same, or even similar to that of Jesus? And, am I aware of my need for Jesus? Do I realize that I am sick and need Jesus?

Prayer

Father, thank you for entering into our world and becoming a human. Help us to enter into other people's world and point to you. We ask that you prompt us to draw close to those outside of our own "comfort zone" so that we can bring them one step closer to you. Help us to remember and reflect on why you came. May the same attitude and mind that was in you be in us. Empower us to love others the way you loved us. Amen.
