Scripture

"He who commits adultery has no sense; he who commits it destroys himself."

Observation

The verses 20 through 35 gives a stern caution against the infamous issue, the adultery. The verses states a father's commandment as to a lamp whereas a mother's teaching, a light. Then, follows the examples of wrongdoings. When a man steals bread to fill his hunger, he is not despised, yet will be charged with hefty penalty. But when a man commits adultery, not only he becomes despicable but also destitute for life since there is no amount that he can pay to restore his honor. Knowing all this, the Psalmist concludes that " He who commits adultery has no sense" for it will ultimately destroy the man. Adultery is Sin. Satan loves to entice men and women into it. There has been numerous individuals in the history who fell into this trap, a voluntary affair of married person with someone other than his or her lawful spouse. Adultery is like a rock thrown into a pane of fragile glass which at the point of impact, everything changes. Unlike a bad debt or penalty that one can pay off, adultery leaves a shattered relationship that can not resume to the original state of well being no matter how much one pays for it. I remember many political figures, sports superstars, good friends, even some evangelical leaders who have succumbed into the very temptation of adultery, and cost them their whole life work. The verse 25 states that "not to desire her beauty in your heart, and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes." This brings the starting point of the fall, the tempt-able heart. Someone once said that "temptation" is the thought plus the inclination to sin, and "sin" is when we inwardly say "yes" to the temptation whether we actually carry out the action or not. Which means this issue of adultery is rampant in it's manifestation in helpless human hearts. No one can restore the honor.

Application

I believe that a married person is ought to intimately love his or her own spouse only, and not be tempted by other flirtatious person. When there are those alluring moments, I should turn away. If I were to find myself flirting, I should stop, and repent. When one regards himself or herself as a bride to the true groom, Lord Jesus, that person ought to keep oneself pure in intimate spiritual relationship with the Lord. When an adulterous lady was caught in action, people brought her out to Jesus before they were about to stone her to death. To their hypocritical gathering, Jesus says "He who has no sin be the first one to throw the stone." Obviously, everyone left except the lady, to whom Jesus said, "Where is everyone who wanted to stone you? Go, sin no more." This is the voice of Jesus to me today. The most amazing realization is that when I was lost both in carnal and spiritual sense, God himself paid the unbelievable price of self sacrifice for my sin. This mystery is worth proclaiming to this adulterous world.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for dying on behalf of me. Thank you for forgiving my adulterous mind and body. I long to be in your presence every moment of my life. If you will, please guide me and teach me your meekness and steadfastness. Please keep my thoughts in straight path according to your will and let it not go astray. In your precious name Jesus, I pray. Amen.
