Scripture

2(C) When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
but with(D) the humble is wisdom.
3(E) The integrity of the upright guides them,
(F) but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.
4(G) Riches do not profit in the day of wrath,
(H) but righteousness delivers from death.
5The righteousness of the blameless(I) keeps his way straight,
but the wicked falls by his own wickedness.

- Proverbs 11:2-5 (ESV)

Observation

It is crystal clear as to the intent of the author for this proverb. It is as if Solomon attempts to educate us and clearly distinguish between self-preservation and self-destruction. He methodically paints us a clear picture as to what success, integrity, wealth may generate in the non-Christian world. More importantly, he addresses each element of purported success and then proceeds to explain how the uneducated are so wrong. He utilizes terms such as crookedness (v.3), the worthlessness of riches in the day of wrath (v.4) and how the wicked will fall by their own wickedness (v. 5). Solomon continues on one by one in setting forth various types of temptations and then educating us as to why they should all be avoided.

Application

In a prior entry, I shared that I have no alternative but to wait upon His time, not mine! I am so very thankful that I could come across this proverb that is enriched with what might be perceived by others as common sense; in contrast, this proverb is profuse with wisdom and a kind reminder of the “do’s and don’ts” that Solomon provided to us. Most importantly, I must always strive for humility as I seek greater wisdom !

Prayer

Dear God:
May I always return to this proverb when times get tougher than they are today. Please assist me to continue to patiently be guided by your will that is truly the sovereign plan. Allow me to never go astray from your will that must be the guide for the balance of my life. Thank you, God, for allowing me the privilege to share my thoughts with respect to this passage to my fellow brothers and sisters. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
