Bible in One Year Passages:
Luke 12:35-48, 1 Timothy 1:1-11, Ezra 1
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction" (Proverbs 1:7).
In this proverb passage, we see the stark contrast between the wise and the fool and the verse 7 explains the secret to obtaining true wisdom. So how can one become wise? According to the verse, one must fear the Lord. But, how does the fear of the Lord cause one to be wise? The fear, which the writer of this proverb refers to, is not the type of fear that causes one to run for his life in horror. Rather, the fear mentioned in the verse is the type of fear that inspires genuine humility which causes one to become teachable before God as one recognizes how great and majestic God is and how insignificant and helpless he is without God. But such profound and life-giving fear of the Lord can not be created in a vacuum nor be experienced by accident. Instead, I must intentionally carve out time each day and each moment to reflect on the greatness of God and my utter dependence on Him. Otherwise, my pride will continue to creep in and cause me to "despise wisdom and instruction" (1:7).
I will reflect on the greatness of God throughout this day and seek His counsel in all the decision making throughout this day.
Dear Lord, you are awesome in power and wisdom and so worthy of my praise. I confess that I have been incredibly foolish at times. Because I failed to fear you, I have feared many other things in life, such as the uncertainty of the future, the expectation of others, and etc. But, today, I want to realign my heart and fear you so that I may find true rest in the presence of your greatness and in my realization of your infinite wisdom and power. So, Holy Spirit, cause me to pause and reflect on the greatness of my Heavenly Father throughout this day. I thank you for the amazing God you are! It is in Christ name I pray. Amen.
