Bible in One Year Passages:
Luke 17:20-37, 2 Timothy 4:1-8, Nehemiah 12
18 There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts,
but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
19 Truthful lips endure forever,
but a lying tongue is but for a moment.
This portion of the passage deals specifically with speech, comparing what the wise to the foolish and the truthful to the deceitful. If anything it shows the importance of words in our interactions with people. Its said that actions speak louder than words but words themselves are still pretty loud. Therefore, as stated in v 18, we need to watch what we say as those who speak out quickly and without thinking speak words that are biting and cut people down. But those who carefully choose their words end up building up those around them. This is reinforced in v 19 where the proverb points out that truthful lips endure forever. Truth is everlasting and is the same throughout the ages. But deceitful words are spoken by those who would use them for immediate gain. One person may say something to curry favor with someone but will say something completely opposite to gain favor with another.
I admit that must be used to the taste of my socks because I oftentimes have my foot in my mouth. This mostly stems from my rush to say what suddenly pops into my head rather than wisely taking time to consider my words and their affect on people. I have noticed that the times I have bitten my tongue and thought things through before speaking is when I can approach problems or people in a loving, Christ-like way. Whether its counting to 10 or taking a deep breath or praying over an issue before weighing in, its best to take time to examine your heart before using your words.
Lord, please grant me the wisdom and patience to watch what I say. Let my words be truthful and bring healing to those around me.
