Bible in One Year Passages:
Luke 14:1-6, 1 Timothy 5:1-16, Ezra 9
9 How long will you lie there, O sluggard?
When will you arise from your sleep?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest,
11 and poverty will come upon you like a robber,
and want like an armed man. (ESV)
Today’s passage provides practical warnings against making careless promises to others (v1-5), being lazy with our responsibilities (v6-11) and using deceitful tactics to cause conflicts and destruction in others around us (v12-19). These advices are very important to follow not only in our secular work setting and dealings with other people, but also in our spiritual life.
As I read the above verses, my initial reaction was, “Well, this warning doesn’t really apply to me because I work very hard at my job and I do my best to provide for my family and our future.” In fact, my problem is usually the opposite as my wife often reminds me. Then I read a commentary which pointed out that this should apply to my spiritual life as well. How well am I doing in working diligently to be a better husband and a father that God entrusted me with as the spiritual leader of my family? How diligently am I working to fulfill my responsibilities at church? It was a wonderful reminder that I cannot get lazy with these God given responsibilities that will bring eternal consequences.
Heavenly Father, thank you for reminding me to wake up from my spiritual slumber and put my best effort in serving you and your kingdom. May I not neglect these awesome responsibilities that you have entrusted me with and be faithful in doing your work in obedience. Please guide me with your strength and power so that I won’t get tired and weary from serving you, but rather always be filled with excitement and encouragement through experiencing your presence in doing your work. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
