Scripture

Now there was in Joppa a disciple named Tabitha, which, translated, means Dorcas. She was full of good works and acts of charity. In those days she became ill and died, and when they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him, urging him, "Please come to us without delay." So Peter rose and went with them. And when he arrived, they took him to the upper room. All the widows stood beside him weeping and showing tunics and other garments that Dorcas made while she was with them. (vs. 36-39)

Observation

It is evident that Dorcas was a woman of influence in her community as people were in deep mourning and in grievance over her death. By being "full of good works and acts of charity," people were attracted to her kindness and they loved and appreciated her greatly. God not only uses people like Paul and Peter who go out and boldly proclaim the gospel for His kingdom purpose, but He also uses people like Dorcas who by simply being "full of good works and acts of charity" impacted lives in her own way.

Application

I don't know if Dorcas ever fully realized what kind of impact she made in the lives of the people around her by making robes and other pieces of clothing. She probably felt that her contributions were small and that it was very minor in comparison to what people like Paul and Peter were doing for God, but nonetheless, she made the clothes for the people out of love, joy, and compassion and that's probably what drew people to her and to God. God uses people in various ways using various talents. Whether it be big or small I want to be constantly reminded that it's the heart and the attitude behind the action that really matters to God and ultimately pleases Him and brings Him glory.

Prayer

Lord, thank you that you have crafted each one of us with such fine detail that no two are the same. Thank you that in our differences we are able to serve you in varying capacities and with the various talents are able to draw different people into your kingdom. In all that I do, help me to act out of love, joy, and compassion. May you be my inspiration and may you be my help that I may be able to live this out daily. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
