Scripture

Psalms 135:15 "The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of men's hands"

Observation

The psalmist expressed his acute awareness of people's wrongdoings in making idols. The men made objects do not speak, see, hear, nor breathe like the ones who made them and trust in them.

Application

The heart of a man constantly seek to worship something since that is the nature of the heart. People in the past longed to see their gods in a tangible image made of something precious such as silver and gold. The nobility of the pricey substance must have added some elusive value to those images, the statues symbolizing their desires and intents. Any worship apart from God himself is idolatry whether it's visible or non visible. In the past, it could have been easier to identify the practice of idol worship since the objects were readily identifiable. But nowadays, there are incognito presence of idol worship in various forms which incorporates all the technology, science, and new social media. Yet, the common thread of creating new forms of idol worship is the same, to satisfy the self indulgence. What is the ultimate satisfaction of men's desire? Is it not to satisfy the innermost thirst like the woman at the well where Jesus offered living water? Then how about getting into the heart of heart, and quench the insatiable thirst, the very nature of longing for the creator. Apart from God there is no blessing or peace. What is my idol? Am I bold enough to drop the practice of following my visceral instinct and follow the word of God and His commandments?

Prayer

Father, I thank you for reminding me of where my heart should focus on. There are many idols in my life, and I am ashamed of them. Please forgive my wrongdoings. I can not do worship without you. Please search my heart and cleanse the entire cavity of my mind and soul, and fill it with your Holy Spirit so that I may worship you and you alone wholeheartedly. Let this day be a day that I will delight in you with rejoice and thanksgiving. To you and you alone shall be my praise and adoration. I pray in Jesus name, Amen.
