Bible in One Year Passages:
43And all were astonished at the majesty of God. But while they were all marveling at everything he was doing, Jesus said to his disciples, 44"Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men." 45 But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, so that they might not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
Jesus "called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases" (Luke 9:1), and yet they couldn't cast an evil spirit out of a son (9:38-40). As Jesus healed the boy, they were astonished at the "majesty of God"... How could they understand, as they were witnessing (and probably enjoying themselves as partakers) this amazing healing power, the LITERAL meaning of Jesus' saying that "the Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men"! It is SUCH a contradiction... They are "afraid", of course, and I don't blame them...
There are more than enough materials for me to read, learn and digest about Jesus and his life and teachings. I don't even have to be "afraid" of what Jesus was saying, like watching a scripted play. And I find myself, more often than not, focusing on His mighty work and divine intervention in my life, downplaying the significance of the ultimate power Jesus displayed by willingly allowing himself to be "delivered into the hands of men". Easy for me to decipher the feelings and actions of the disciples, and even easier to take things for granted...
Lord, may your teaching, through being "delivered into the hands of men", be reflected in my thoughts, my word and my actions! Thank you, once again, for reminding me of the ultimate power of the cross above and beyond the demon-casting and healing miracles you performed for the glory of the Father. In Jesus name, amen.
