Bible in One Year Passages:
Luke 1:1-25, Ephesians 1:1-14, 1 Kings 1
5Oh that my ways may be steadfast
in keeping your statutes!
6Then I shall not be put to shame,
having my eyes fixed on all your commandments (Psalm 119:4-6).
To live a blessed life I must stay the course of the path God has chosen for me as revealed in his words (119:5), yet I must confess that staying the course is much easier said than done. How shall I stay the course when million things race through my mind at any given moment and compete for my attention throughout the day? Embedded in the second half of the verse 6 is the psalmist’s simple—not easy—solution to that very struggle with which all those who take God and his words seriously grapple.
“Having my eyes fixed on all your
commandments (119:6b).”
Just as the vehicle on the road follows and moves toward the direction of the eyes of the driver, my life also follows and moves toward the things I pay attention to. As such, the only way for me to stay the course of God’s chosen path, I must learn to align and fix my eyes—and my thoughts—to God’s words rather than other thoughts. The idea of constantly fixing our eyes or thoughts on something seems daunting and almost impossible at first. However, we all know how to constantly fix our thoughts on something. For example, we all know how to worry about something constantly or dwell on the offensive words someone spoke to us. The moment our “eyes” are off the words of God, we are off the track!
I will store a daily verse on my Smartphone and meditate throughout the day so that I may stay the course this day.
Abba Father, thank you so much for the gift of your words. You not only called us to stay the course, but you gave us the most powerful tool which is your words, the Bible. Would you help me to cherish your words and fix my thoughts on your words throughout this day so that I may walk on the path of blessed. Holy Spirit, my counselor, I seek your grace and empowerment upon me throughout this day so that I may fix my eyes on the words of my Abba and enjoy the blessed life this day. It is in Christ name I pray. Amen.
