Bible in One Year Passages:
Luke 1:26-38, Ephesians 1:15-23, 1 Kings 2
I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you (Psalm 119:11).
The psalmist declares that the possibility of a pure life depends on the content of his mind and memory. The outward life depends on inner factors. So, he has stored up God’s Word in his heart (not just on a tablet or scroll outside of him) so that he might not sin against God.
If the heart stored up with God’s Word is the antidote to sin, then that means one thing – Bible memory!
Dallas Willard, who is famous for his book, The Spirit of the Disciplines, said, “As a pastor, teacher, and counselor I have repeatedly seen the transformation of inner and outer life that comes simply from memorization and meditation upon Scripture. Personally, I would never undertake to pastor a church or guide a program of Christian education that did not involve a continuous program of memorization of the choicest passages of Scripture for people of all ages" (p. 150).
If God’s Word were only in my ears, it would be lost quickly. But, when I have it stored or hidden in my heart, and treasure it like gold and silver, that word will function to keep me from sin. Memorizing scripture is not a discipline for its own sake. It is because the scriptures are a treasure and I will be need it before the day is done to help me escape a sinful attitude and live a life that glorifies God.
Father, your words are a treasure and I delight in them! Help me to fill my mind and memory with your instructions that I may carry them in my heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
