Bible in One Year Passages:
"Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock." (vv. 46-48a)
Here Jesus explains what it means to live an authentic Christian life. It is not enough to call Jesus "Lord," but make Him the Lord of our lives. God does not want a lip service from us, but a life of obedience, truly living out what He says. As a master teacher, Jesus illustrates his point by telling a story of two men building a house. The one who obeys the Word is like one who builds a house on the rock with a firm foundation. He is secure when a storm comes. But the one who only hears the word without obeying it is like one who builds a house on sand with no foundation. When a storm comes, he will be destroyed. God demands me to be a doer of the word, instead of a mere hearer of the word.
It's always easy to live out a Christian life through holy words without holy action. I may know what to say to sound pious. But what's important is if my life backs up what I proclaim. God sees if I really live out the lordship of Christ as I make Him the center of my life. Obedience definitely involves action, but more than just action. It is ultimately a matter of heart because obedience flows out of my intimacy with the Lord.
Lord, I long to be intimate with you. I want to walk and talk with you today. I want to experience your presence in my life. Lord, help me how I can live out a life of obedience today as I enjoy my intimacy with you. Lord, grant me your grace to live a life, built on the unshakable rock, centered on Christ alone. Amen.
