Bible in One Year Passages:
28 "What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work in the vineyard today.' 29And he answered, 'I will not,' but afterward he changed his mind and went. 32 John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him (Matthew 21:28-29, 32).
This parable bears much resemblance to the more well-known parable found in Luke 15:11-32 which is often referred to as the parable of the prodigal son. Here are some parallels I see: First, there are two sons in both parables. Secondly, in both parables, one son represents the self-righteous, religious people who were blind to their own sinfulness and failed to seek God's righteousness while the other son represents the blatant sinners who finally came around to accepting God's grace through repentance (v.29,32a). Thirdly, in both parables, the stubbornness of the self-righteous and their refusal to accept grace are highlighted (v.32b). Lastly, in both parables, the central message is the heart of God which desires to see sinners return "home" to Him.
Self-righteousness is a dangerous spiritual "disease" that can easily seep into and infect my heart. The symptoms of that disease are self-sufficiency, stubbornness to repent (turn to God), and refusal to accept God's free grace. We will do well to remember that, according to the parable, it is the religious people who are far more susceptible to that disease of self-righteousness than the irreligious people (the blatant sinners).
Even as I continue to share the the good news of Jesus Christ with others, I will all the more diligently preach that same gospel to myself which says, "KJ, you are more fallen than you know but more loved than you ever dare to imagine. It is only by the grace of Jesus Christ, you can live as God's delight this day and any day!"
Abba, I thank you and celebrate you for your persistent love for the unrepentant, stiff-necked people like me. I confess and ask for forgiveness for cheapening your grace by ignoring or abusing your grace which cost you everything. Would you grab hold of my ever-wandering heart and help me to fully embrace your grace and live a life that brings joy and laughter? Thank you for your unswerving commitment to me and all your children. I pray all this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen
