Psalm 54:1 "Save me, O God, by thy name, and vindicate me by thy might."
When one is pursued by an enemy, he or she would call out for help should there be a helper, naturally. Here, David is chased by Saul and his men who reported whereabout of his hiding place. Being pursued by a deadly enemy is disturbing enough, but being found by him is truly a heart stopper. Nevertheless, David showed not only his faith in God but also the confidence that God will vindicate him as it is written. Although David possessed his own army and had numerous opportune moments to take a revenge for all the wrong doings of Saul, he elected to place the judgement in God's hand according to His time rather than on his own time. David's appeasement to God seem to start with simple cry out to God, yet he gives undeniable reasons why God needs to help him- for they (David's enemies) do not set God before them. Then he gives past account of how God has been good to him, and do not forget to give his thanksgiving and dependency upon God. David's cry was a righteous call for a help. He knew exactly who were involved and what to ask.
If any child comes to his or her father and asks for a help in such terms, I don't know if any child can do this, any earthly father will be dazzled by such a clarity of conscience, and more than willing to lend a help. If I ask God in this terms, He will do more for me. David knew how to move the heart of God. At first, I though that he was crying out of fear, maybe he was at first. But then I realized that David already had the conviction in his heart and showed his victory over his fear by trusting in God. He no long needed to cry out his tears but just be thankful in any circumstances his enemy might bring. David's faith in God not only kept him alive but allowed him to thrive in confidence throughout his life. How about me?
Lord, in my distress, I come to you. I call out to you. I put my trust in you. Save me. Let not my enemies be glad of their triumph over me for they do not set you first before them. Deliver me. Let your son be restored of his glad countenance before you, and joyfully praise your name. In your name Jesus, I pray. Amen.
