Bible in One Year Passages:
Jesus said to them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s." And they marveled at him. (v. 17)
Religious leaders sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to trap Jesus and asked him if it is right to pay taxes to Caesar. If he said yes, then he would have been supporting Rome and Jewish people would have been turned off. If he said no, then it would have been against the law. But Jesus who is full of wisdom said give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s. And they marveled at him.
It is good to obey Jesus’ teaching regarding taxes because it simply works out. I have seen one Christian doctor pay taxes according to the law and he is doing mission work overseas using his retirement. I also know others who cheat on taxes and might have gained in the short term but have lost in the long run. I also remember one person who cheated on taxes and when caught, lost his fortune and committed suicide.
What are the things that belong to God? Definitely tithing. But if I really think about it, I belong to God and I am His. I should give all of myself to Him.
Heavenly Father, thank you for providing me with everything I need and little bit more to enjoy. It would be nice if you can do that rest of my life. Help me to be good stewards of what you give me. Help me to serve others like you came to serve. Help me not to be selfish but go out of my comfort zone to serve you. Would you teach me what it means to give my life to you? I am thankful that you are full of wisdom and know what to do with my life. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
