Bible in One Year Passages:
Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial
26 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 27And Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away, for it is written, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.' 28But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee." 29 Peter said to him, "Even though they all fall away, I will not." 30And Jesus said to him, "Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times." 31But he said emphatically, "If I must die with you, I will not deny you." And they all said the same.
In this passage, Jesus foretells that all will fall away and be scattered (referring to his disciples). Jesus conveys that it is in fulfillment of scripture. Yet Peter and the other disciples do not focus on what is to be fulfilled, but their own heart’s reaction. In the scripture that Jesus points out, an analogy is displayed of Jesus being the Shepherd and the disciples being the sheep. Sheep in general follow the shepherd but in this passage, it doesn’t seem to be the case.
As disciples of Jesus, we are called to be the sheep to follow the lead of the shepherd. Many times we find that we tend to stray and despite the gentle reminder of guidance from the shepherd, we continue in defiance and ‘emphatically’ proclaim that we are able, whereas, without the shepherd’s guidance, we are lost.
Lord, forgive us for we tend to stray and rely on our own understanding. Be gentle with us in disciplining us in our ways. Help us Lord to remain focused on what’s truly the will of the Father and that we will remain in the care of our Shepherd. Help us to know the true meaning of relying soley on your Grace and Love. In Christ’s Name, Amen.
