Bible in One Year Passages:
"Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you." (vv. 6-7)
These three devoted women who visited the tomb early in the morning were the very first ones to hear the news about Jesus' resurrection. What a privilege to hear the news first! But when they heard the news, they were alarmed (v. 6). And even after they heard the explanation from the angel, they were immobilized by fear (v. 8). How can the good news bring so much fear? Perhaps, they approached the empty tomb with a wrong expectation. They were there to anoint the body, expecting Jesus to stay dead in the tomb. It's obvious that Jesus told them that he would resurrect (v. 7); but they apparently didn't take it seriously nor believe and anticipate that it would really happen. They didn't expect to hear the good news.
Sometimes it's so easy to be devoted to God, but without correct expectations. Devotion is great. But devotion alone will not be enough if it is just my human effort apart from the will and plan of God. I need to make sure that my devotion is more than just personal discipline, but based on God's promises and according to His Word. However, in the end, it's comforting to know that God still honored these women's devotion by making them the first ones to hear the greatest news in human history.
Lord, as I devote myself to serve you, I would search your heart and your will that my devotion would be in line with your plan. Lord, forgive me if I come to you in worship or in service with my agenda, more than your agenda. I don't want to rise up early in the morning to see Jesus who is dead in his tomb, but seeking to see the risen Lord. Lord, as I begin the day today, I want to start with anticipation and excitement to encounter you, my risen Lord throughout the day. In Christ's Name. Amen.
