Bible in One Year Passages:
31"Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, 32but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers." 33Peter said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death." 34Jesus said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me."
In vv. 31 - 34, there is an interesting dialogue that takes places between Jesus and Peter. Jesus being concerned with what is to come tells Peter to watch himself that his faith may not fail. Jesus knew the road Peter will eventually take in denying Jesus three times. And yet, Peter misunderstands Jesus' warning by saying "I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death." Jesus wanted to convey to Peter of what will become of him in hopes that he would guard himself against temptations in the near future. Peter thought that he would always be with Jesus. That the death of Jesus would mean the death of himself as well. And whether Peter spoke up too soon or was filled with passion at the moment, his statement of following Christ did not resonate with what Jesus warns him about. Peter did not understand that he cannot go to death with Jesus for that was not the fulfillment of Scripture.
This passage is a reminder to me that when I'm passionate about the Lord, I must always check my heart at that moment. Just like Peter, I tend to say and think things about following Christ while not seeing the bigger picture. I want to be sensitive to God's Spirit.
Lord, help me to better discern my heart in my walk with you. Just as Peter, I tend to let the passionate side get the best of me. I often jump into conclusions without fully knowing Your heart for me. Help me Lord, so that I may live a obedient life.
