Bible in One Year Passages:
Luke 23:13-25, Hebrews 9:23-28, Isaiah 45-46
20: Whoever sings songs to a heavy heart
is like one who takes off a garment on a cold day,
and like vinegar on soda.
26: Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain
is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.
The words give insight into what we are to avoid or practice in relationships. Verse 16 – don’t hoard all of the good things for yourself. Thus it is good to share what is good. Verse 17 – don’t overstay your welcome. Thus a reminder to be mindful of others and not focused on your own needs. Verse 18 – don’t lie about someone you know. Verse 19 – don’t trust a double-crosser. Verse 20 – Don’t sing to someone who is mourning. Verse 21 – Give graciously to someone who wrongs you.
Verse 20 applies to me because I have been recently faced with two friends who are going through mourning and difficulty based on circumstances beyond their control. As Christians, we say we will pray and I think that is where it starts and ends. But I wonder if this is enough. As all of these verses highlight, relationship is about sacrifice and giving which is best exemplified by Jesus.
I am reminded of these words:
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. (Philippians 2:3-4)
Lord help me to step out of my routine and comfort to give of my time, resources and energy when I need to be there for a friend who is hurting. Thank you for being my friend even when I was your enemy. May you be glorified in all my relationships and Your love manifested as genuine and tangible.
