Bible in One Year Passages:
And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
The scribes were the leaders of the synagogues who organized life in the synagogues. They generally held positions of high respect and authority in Jewish life. Jesus condemns their egocentric outlook, as a warning to those that would otherwise follow their example.
This is a warning for me and others like me that are in places of leadership where serving is supposed to be the first priority with attention and the limelight as consequences that come with the territory.
Help me, Lord, to serve you and others with an honest heart.
