Science is often misunderstood as being anti-faith or anti-Christian, by folks within the church as well as those who oppose faith. Before jumping to conclusions, we should be better informed on what we know and what is knowable, so that we can make a more reasoned stance on what it is that we believe. This is a 6-week crash course on modern science and scientific concepts, just enough to prod us to become lifelong students.
Dates: July 25 - August 8 (3 weeks)
Days and Time: Sundays, 12:45-3:15p
Location: Olive Campus Auditorium
Instructor(s): Pastor Caleb Kim
The National Organization of Theater Owners (NATO) says, theaters in the US and Canada sold 1.4 billion tickets in 2007. If that many people watch films in a year, can you imagine the impact it has in shaping the culture? Films are movers and shakers in today’s society. One way to engage God and culture is through films. When was the last time you’ve walked out of a movie theater thinking deeper about the movie, its story, and characters? As followers of Christ, we can a take closer look at movies that reveal theological truths in today’s fast-paced culture. This course is designed to help Christians explore possible cultural and theological approaches to film criticism, concentrating upon how the Bible and film might be brought into mutually enriching dialogue. For three Sundays, we will view three different featured films with small group discussion time at the end of each movie. Some films for consideration are: The Book of Eli (2010), Little Miss Sunshine (2006), Stranger Than Fiction (2006), Run Lola Run (1998), The Truman Show (1998), Doubt (2008), About Schmidt (2002), Gran Torino (2009), Juno (2008), and The Hurt Locker (2010).
